Megan almost walked right past them.
She was pushing a cart overflowing with groceries, laundry detergent, diapers for her sister’s baby, and everything Adrian had texted her to pick up on the way home.
Her old sweater had a small stain on the sleeve.
Her jeans were faded.
Her hair was tied into a messy ponytail.
She hadn’t slept properly in weeks.
Between cooking, cleaning, working from home, and taking care of everyone else’s needs, Megan had slowly stopped having time for herself.
That morning, Adrian had looked at her and said:
“You should make more of an effort sometimes.”
The words had hurt.
But Megan said nothing.
She simply grabbed the shopping list and left.
Now, standing in aisle twelve of a crowded supermarket, she finally understood why her husband had suddenly become so interested in her appearance.
Twenty feet away stood Adrian.
Her husband of eleven years.
His arm was wrapped around the waist of a beautiful young woman.
She wore a fitted red dress, expensive heels, and flawless makeup.
Then Adrian leaned down.
And kissed her.
Not a friendly kiss.
Not a misunderstanding.
He kissed her like a man kissing the woman he loved.
Megan stopped breathing.
The shopping cart rolled forward without her.
It bumped softly into a shelf.
Adrian heard the noise.
He opened his eyes.
And saw his wife.
His face went white.
“Megan?”
The woman beside him pulled away.
“Who is that?”
Megan walked toward them.
Adrian immediately released the woman’s waist.
“Megan, wait. I can explain.”
SLAP!
Megan’s palm struck his face.
Several shoppers turned.
Adrian stood frozen.
The woman stepped backward in shock.
“What the hell?” she shouted.
Megan looked at her.
“Who are you?”
The woman stared at Adrian.
“You didn’t tell her?”
Megan’s stomach dropped.
“Tell me what?”
Adrian quickly stepped between them.
“Bianca, don’t.”
Bianca’s expression changed.
“Don’t what?”
“Not here.”
Megan laughed bitterly.
“You were happy to kiss her here, but suddenly talking is too embarrassing?”
Adrian lowered his voice.
“Please. Let’s go home.”
“No.”
“Megan—”
“I said no.”
She pointed at Bianca.
“How long?”
Neither answered.
“How long have you been sleeping with my husband?”
Bianca folded her arms.
“Six months.”
Megan felt as though someone had punched her in the chest.

Six months.
She thought about those months.
The nights Adrian said he was working late.
The sudden business trips.
The new cologne.
The password on his phone.
And every time Megan had asked if something was wrong, Adrian had kissed her forehead and told her she was imagining things.
Megan looked at him.
“Six months?”
Adrian sighed.
“It wasn’t supposed to happen.”
She almost laughed.
“You accidentally had an affair for six months?”
“Megan, our marriage hasn’t been good for a long time.”
There it was.
Not an apology.
An excuse.
Adrian looked at her worn clothes.
“You stopped caring about yourself.”
Megan stared at him.
“What?”
“When we met, you were different. You dressed up. You went out. You were fun.”
Megan’s eyes filled with tears.
“And do you know why I’m not that woman anymore?”
Adrian remained silent.
“Because while you were going to restaurants and hotels with her, I was taking care of our home.”
Her voice began trembling.
“I cooked your meals. I washed your clothes. I paid the bills. I took your mother to her doctor’s appointments.”
People nearby had stopped pretending not to listen.
Megan pointed toward the abandoned shopping cart.
“Look inside that cart, Adrian.”
He didn’t.
“LOOK AT IT.”
He finally turned.
There wasn’t a single luxury item for Megan.
Everything was for the household.
Megan wiped away a tear.
“I came here today with forty dollars in coupons because you told me we needed to save money.”
Bianca suddenly frowned.
“Save money?”
Megan looked at her.
“Yes.”
Bianca slowly turned toward Adrian.
“You told me you were rich.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
“Bianca…”
She stepped away.
“You said the financial problems were because Megan was wasting your money.”
Megan stared at him.
“What financial problems?”
Adrian went silent.
That frightened her more than anything else.
“What financial problems, Adrian?”
“It’s complicated.”
Bianca laughed.
“No, it isn’t.”
Adrian shot her a warning look.
“Don’t.”
But Bianca was angry now.
“You told me the house was paid off.”
Megan’s face went blank.
“What does our house have to do with this?”
Adrian said nothing.
Megan stepped closer.
“What did you do?”
“I said we’ll discuss it at home.”
“No. We discuss it now.”
Bianca reached into her designer handbag.
“I think she deserves to know.”
“Bianca!”
She pulled out a folded document.
“I found this in his car yesterday.”
She handed it to Megan.
Megan opened it.
For several seconds, she didn’t understand what she was reading.
Then she saw their address.
Her hands began shaking.
It was a loan agreement.
Secured against their house.
$240,000.
Megan looked at Adrian.
“What is this?”
He couldn’t meet her eyes.
“We can fix it.”
“You borrowed against our house?”
“It was an investment.”
“What investment?”
No answer.
Megan looked at the date.
Eight months earlier.
Two months before Adrian’s affair with Bianca had supposedly begun.
Then she saw something else.
Her signature.
Except Megan had never signed this document.
She stared at it.
“Adrian…”
He stepped forward.
“Listen to me.”
“This isn’t my signature.”
Bianca’s eyes widened.
“What?”
Megan held up the document.
“You forged my name?”
Adrian grabbed for it.
Megan pulled it away.
“Don’t touch me!”
The supermarket had become strangely quiet around them.
Adrian’s confidence disappeared.
“I was going to tell you.”
“When? After we lost the house?”
“We’re not losing anything.”
Megan stared at the man she had spent eleven years trusting.
Suddenly, the affair wasn’t the most frightening betrayal anymore.
“You didn’t just cheat on me.”
Her voice became quiet.
“You gambled our home.”
Adrian shook his head.
“It wasn’t gambling.”
“What happened to the money?”
He said nothing.
Bianca answered for him.
“I think I know.”
Both turned toward her.
Bianca opened her phone.
“Three months ago, Adrian asked me to help him transfer money into an investment account.”
Adrian’s face drained of color.
“Bianca, shut up.”
She stared at him.
“You told me it was your money.”
Megan looked between them.
“How much?”
Bianca swallowed.
“Almost two hundred thousand.”
Megan felt sick.
“Where is it now?”
Bianca looked at Adrian.
“I don’t know.”
Adrian grabbed his jacket.
“This conversation is over.”
He turned to leave.
Megan caught his arm.
“No.”
Adrian looked at her.
“You don’t get to walk away.”
“Megan, let go.”
“Tell me where our money went.”
Adrian pulled his arm free.
Then a voice behind them said:
“I can tell you.”
Everyone turned.
An older man in a supermarket manager’s uniform stood at the end of the aisle.
Megan recognized him.
“Mr. Harris?”
He had lived next door to Megan and Adrian for nearly five years.
But he wasn’t looking at Megan.
He was staring at Adrian.
“I’ve been wondering when your wife would find out.”
Adrian froze.
Megan frowned.
“Find out what?”
Mr. Harris reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.
“I saw Adrian here with this woman several times.”
Bianca looked embarrassed.
“But that’s not why I kept these.”
He opened several photographs.
They showed Adrian meeting another man in the supermarket parking lot.
In one photograph, Adrian was handing him an envelope.
In another, the man was carrying a briefcase.
Megan looked at Adrian.
“Who is that?”
Adrian didn’t answer.
Mr. Harris did.
“His business partner.”
Megan shook her head.
“Adrian doesn’t have a business partner.”
Mr. Harris stared at her.
“Yes, he does.”
Then he said a name.
Megan’s entire body went cold.
She knew that name.
She had seen it only once before.
Years ago.
On court documents Adrian had sworn belonged to a chapter of his life that was completely over.
Megan slowly turned toward her husband.
“You told me you hadn’t spoken to him in ten years.”
Adrian backed away.
Bianca looked confused.
“Who is he?”
Megan’s eyes never left Adrian.
“His brother.”
Bianca frowned.
“So?”
Megan swallowed.
“His brother went to prison for fraud.”
Adrian suddenly turned and walked quickly toward the exit.
“Adrian!”
He didn’t stop.
Megan looked down at the forged signature on the loan agreement.
Then at the photographs.
The affair.
The secret loan.
The missing money.
The meetings with his brother.
They weren’t separate betrayals.
They were connected.
And suddenly Megan realized something that terrified her.
Adrian hadn’t been telling her to save money because their family was struggling.
He had been quietly moving their money somewhere she couldn’t reach it.
Megan looked at Bianca.
“Did Adrian ever tell you he planned to leave me?”
Bianca hesitated.
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Next week.”
Megan’s heart stopped.
“Why next week?”
Bianca slowly opened her phone.
“He said everything would finally be ready.”
Megan stared at her.
“What would be ready?”
Bianca showed her a message Adrian had sent two days earlier.
Megan read it.
Then read it again.
Her face went pale.
Friday. The transfer will be complete. After that, she can’t touch any of it.
Megan looked toward the supermarket exit.
Adrian was gone.
She had walked into the store believing she had caught her husband cheating.
But the kiss had exposed something much bigger.
He wasn’t simply preparing to leave his wife.
He had been preparing to leave with everything they owned.
Megan looked at the cart she had abandoned in the aisle.
An hour earlier, she had been worried about saving three dollars on laundry detergent.
Now she might have to fight for her entire future.
But Adrian had made one mistake.
He had spent so long seeing Megan as the tired, messy wife waiting for him at home that he had forgotten who she had been before their marriage.
Megan picked up the loan document.
Then she looked at Bianca.
“Send me every message he ever sent you.”
Bianca stared at her.
“Why?”
Megan wiped the final tear from her cheek.
“Because he’s had six months to prepare.”
She folded the document carefully.
“Now it’s my turn.”
